Peer-reviewed journal articles are available to the public for free through the Philippine Journal of Science, the Department of Science and Technology announced on Monday.
Founded in 1906, the Philippine Journal of Science is the oldest scientific peer-reviewed publication in the country, as per its website. Topics in the journal are on natural sciences, engineering, mathematics and social sciences.

The open-access journal, which has been available since 2007, may be a boon to those in the academe and researchers, as journals are notorious for their high prices, with some charging thousands of dollars for an annual subscription.
Usually, university libraries invest in journal subscriptions, but these are only available to those within the school’s community such as enrolled students and faculty. Otherwise, researchers and other members of the public would need to shell out their own funds for access to reliable studies.
DOST made the announcement on Facebook, using a viral meme based on a still from the anime “Taiyo no Yusha Faibado (The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird)”.
It provided complete citation of the image used, perhaps serving as a reminder to the science community and the public that with access to free information, proper citing of sources is still important. /ra
