Telecommunications company Smart outperformed rival Globe when it came to overall download speed, said United Kingdom-based wireless coverage mapping company OpenSignal.
OpenSignal released this week its Mobile Network Update for August 2018. The company collected 949,285,077 measurements from 76,034 test devices between May 1 to July 29 of this year.
Smart bested Globe in terms of 4G average download speeds, with 13.02 megabits per second over the latter’s 7.34 megabits per second. Smart also has 5.53 megabits per second on 4G average upload speeds, better than Globe’s 2.96 megabits per second.
However, Globe outperformed Smart when it came to 3G download speed. OpenSignal recorded Globe’s with 2.7 megabits per second while Smart is at 2.34 megabits per second.
But when it comes to overall download speed, Smart wins with 7.46 megabits per second over Globe’s 5.01 megabits per second. OpenSignal noted that this is recorded based on an operator’s 3G and 4G network.
When it comes to 4G latency, the two operators are at a draw — Globe with 55.15 milliseconds, while Smart with 53.48 milliseconds. OpenSignal defined latency as “the delay data experiences as it makes a round trip through the network.”
Back in May, the mapping company stated in a blog post that it has seen progress in everyday mobile speeds for both operators. From May 2017 to April 2018, Globe’s overall speed increased by 63 percent, from 3 megabits per second to 4.9 megabits per secons. Meanwhile, Smart almost doubled OpenSignal’s measurements from 3.8 megabits per second to 7.4 megabits per second. JB
