Google pays tribute to PH scientist Fe Del Mundo with a doodle

Google celebrated the 107th birth anniversary of National Scientist Fe del Mundo by featuring the late Filipino physician with its signature doodle.

The doodle, which went live on Tuesday at midnight, shows her caring for a child.

Born in Intramuros, Manila, in 1911, she was known as the “Grand Dame of Philippine Pediatrics” and was the first woman to be admitted to Harvard Medical School.

She was named National Scientist in 1980, the first woman to be honored with this award.

Also known as “The Angel of Santo Tomas,” del Mundo devoted her life to child healthcare and revolutionized pediatric medicine in the process.

In fact, she was the founder of the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines, the Children’s Medical Center which was later renamed to Fe Del Mundo Medical Center.

Del Mundo was conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize and the Lakandula Award with the rank of Bayani.

She was also honored the Elizabeth Blackwell Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind and was the first lay recipient of the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award.

She died on Aug. 6, 2011, and her remains are buried at the Libingan ng mag Bayani. /cbb
