WATCH: Mom catches 6-year-old son using Amazon Alexa to solve math homework

What is one to do when faced with difficult math homework? For a six-year-old boy in New Jersey, United States, asking his mother’s Alexa-enabled hands-free speaker Amazon Echo for answers is the best way to go.

Yerelyn Cueva was surprised when she found her son Jariel solving his homework with ease by asking the answer from the device, as seen via Twitter on Dec. 20. Her post, which had gone viral, has garnered over 8.2 million views, 137,000 retweets and 475,000 likes, as of this writing.

The six-year-old dressed in red can be seen doing his homework at the table in the 11-second video.

“Alexa, what’s five minus three?” the cheeky boy asked the smart device. Not long after, the Amazon Echo responded with the correct answer to the question.

“The funny thing is that math is actually his favorite subject,” Cueva told New York Post yesterday, Dec. 26, saying she is considering turning the speaker off to prevent her son from cheating in the future. “I was surprised because he knows this stuff. He was just being lazy. Taking a shortcut.”

Netizens, however, lauded Jariel’s quick thinking. They took to the comments section of his mother’s post to praise the boy for being resourceful.

Others, echoing the sentiments of other commenters, were telling Cueva to reward the child for his ingenuity.

Earlier this month, a parrot in the United Kingdom, who is known for his swearing, made headlines for ordering online through Alexa. His owners also discovered that the intelligent bird uses the smart device to play music. JB
