The new trailer for “Sonic at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games” was released last Wednesday, Sept. 11 and previews snippets of the game’s features.

The upcoming mobile game streamlines the last dozen years of video game characters Sonic and Mario in the sporting competition.

Players can expect to see Sega mascot Sonic and a raft of fellow franchise characters involved in Olympic events that include tennis, diving, fencing, hurdles, wall climbing, clay pigeon shooting and hammer throwing.

There will also be a handful of “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise elements thrown in for good measure, such as collectible golden rings and pinball-style ricochet bumpers.

“Sonic at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games” is expected to launch between March and May 2020 on Android and iOS operating systems as a single-player game with international rankings.

Sonic had previously made his Olympic games mobile gaming debut through 2008’s identically titled “Sonic at the Olympic Games”.

Also published and developed by Sega, “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020” is expected early November 2019, with Sonic and Nintendo mascot Mario continuing their now-friendly rivalry on the Nintendo Switch, while the Olympic games themselves are to be held in Tokyo and the surrounding area from July 24 to Aug. 9, 2020.

A “Sonic the Hedgehog” feature film is also due in 2020, with a staggered international release to begin in February, starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in leading roles. RGA/JB
