The sight of a spider is enough to make any arachnophobe (a person with a fear of spiders) shudder. It can therefore be the stuff of nightmares for them to find one of those crawlers inside one’s body.

That nightmare became a reality for a man who discovered a spider inside one of his ears when he tried to ease the pain of his blocked ears last Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Prior to finding the animal, Liam Gomez had swept away a spider’s nest above the front door of his home in Kent, United Kingdom on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as per Birmingham Mail on Friday, Oct. 11.

When the 27-year-old woke up the morning after with blocked ears and vertigo, he called in sick for work. He then applied drops of olive oil in his ears to relieve the pain, before returning to sleep. Gomez recalled feeling tickling in one of his ears, but had credited it to the oil.

“When I woke up a couple of hours later, I could still feel the sensation, but also hear a faint scratching sound, so I decided to investigate with a cotton bud,” he was quoted as saying. “It came out clean, apart from a single leg! It was at that point I thought — ‘oh god, I know what that means!’”

Following the discovery, Gomez used a hairpin and a cotton bud to remove the animal from inside his ear.

Gomez described the incident as an “absolute nightmare” since he is an arachnophobe. He also pointed out the irony of the situation, citing that he works as a web designer.

He believes the spider he found inside his ear came from the nest he had previously swept away, and said it might have entered his ear as “some sort of revenge mission.”

“I didn’t think to check if it was female,” he said in the report. “I’m hoping it was male, because I’m really hoping it didn’t have [the] chance to lay eggs!” Ryan Arcadio/JB
