Eureka! Physicists celebrate evidence of particle

By

GENEVA— To cheers and standing ovations from scientists, the world’s biggest atom smasher claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle Wednesday, calling it “consistent” with the long-sought Higgs boson — popularly known as the “God particle” — that helps explain what gives all matter in the universe size and shape.

‘THE GOD PARTICLE’. In this May 20, 2011 file photo, a wall painting by artist Josef Kristofoletti is seen at the Atlas experiment site at the European Center for Nuclear Research, CERN, outside Geneva, Switzerland. The painting shows how a Higgs boson may look. Scientists at CERN plan to make an announcement on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 about their hunt for the elusive sub-atomic particle. “We have now found the missing cornerstone of particle physics,” Rolf Heuer, director of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), told scientists.

He said the newly discovered subatomic particle is a boson, but he stopped just shy of claiming outright that it is the Higgs boson itself — an extremely fine distinction.

“As a layman, I think we did it,” he told the elated crowd. “We have a discovery. We have observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson.”

The Higgs boson, which until now has been a theoretical particle, is seen as the key to our understanding of why matter has mass, which combines with gravity to give an object weight. The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton’s discovery of it: Gravity was there all the time before Newton explained it. But now scientists know what a boson is and can put that knowledge to further use.

CERN’s atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.

Two independent teams at CERN said Wednesday they have both “observed” a new subatomic particle — a boson. Heuer called it “most probably a Higgs boson, but we have to find out what kind of Higgs boson it is. ”

Asked whether the find is a discovery, Heuer answered, “As a layman, I think we have it. But as a scientist, I have to say, “‘What do we have?’ ”

The leaders of the two teams — Joe Incandela, head of CMS with 2,100 scientists, and Fabiola Gianotti, head of ATLAS with 3,000 scientists — each presented in complicated scientific terms what was essentially extremely strong evidence of a new particle.

Incandela said it was too soon to say definitively whether it is the “standard model” Higgs that Scottish physicist Peter Higgs and others predicted in the 1960s. That was part of a standard model theory of physics involving an energy field where particles interact with a key particle, the Higgs boson. Asked his opinion, Higgs said he also could not yet say.

The stunning work elicited standing ovations and frequent applause at a packed auditorium in CERN as Gianotti and Incandela each took their turn.

Incandela called it “a Higgs-like particle” and said “we know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found.”

“Thanks, nature!” Gianotti said to laughs, giving thanks for the discovery.

The phrase “God particle” was coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman but is used by laymen, not physicists, as an easier way of explaining how the subatomic universe works and got started.

This proves the standard model. All I can say is Hail to Science! There is now an independent proof of the existence of the HIGGS. Where’s God?? Probably “God” was made up of HIGGS too and deeply trapped within the HIGGS field.

Ah! Now i know who you are. Please scrutinize the standard model further. I am not promoting the “God” you are bashing. I’m just after a sound scientific approach. CERN should not stop at this point. More beyond-sub-particles are still waiting to be discovered.

I agree. This should be in the front page. Panu na yan? May defense na ngayon ang chicken and egg theory. Meaning, hindi mo pala kailangan ng GOD para magexist. Presence of Higgs Boson lang pwede na mag exist ang isang bagay. We can actually already create Matter. I agree, the implications of this is earth shaking but in the end, this understanding has bought us closer to understanding Life than we have ever been.

Scientists should be as humble as Isaac Newton when he said despite his standing on the shuoulders of giants ( Archimedes, Galileo included), his knowledge is like a boy playing by the seashore where vastness of ocean beyond his reach lies the most inifinitely unfathomable things to be discovered.

oo nga. Let’s wait for their explanation and if ever it makes sense.

Trying to find out how the universe got created will be an endless quest for mankind. These are just trifle discoveries with respect to the vast mysteries of the universe. I believe in the infinity symbol and what it represents.

Its a new particle indeed. But still way too far from God particle.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001536579607 Harold Gregorio

For crying out loud, don’t call HIGGS boson a Good particle. It’s an insult to Science. And how competent are you to say that the particle “indeed” is too far from the HIGGS?
      What’s your educational background?

      • http://twitter.com/arvinic Arvin Acosta

So you are one of those who follow blindly the people with PhD and M.A. You only listen to those with authority. I am a philosophy graduate. i just want to be critical in thinking than follow blindly the gods of science.

Its an opinion that the standard model hasn’t proven itself yet. There are still smaller things yet to be discovered, more than sub-atomic in nature. A new particle was found, yes but they are not yet certain that it is the source of all matter.

Will you yell at me, if i say Higgs is a misconception?

Still we need to wait and see…

To all you idiots out there not even asking why this ‘God Particle’ exist and who made this??? of course one who is super and powerful enough and that is GOD. Science only prove facts that an object came from something… and of course we all came from something a particle or whatever. But we as creature should understand the mystery of life and we definitely came from something, but there is always a creator for any masterpiece in this world its not by accident of whatever theory science finding may bring.

First did you ask yourself why we always see dark particles by just opening our eyes everyday? science is by far from explaining all of these… did we ever ask why our heart keep on beating and who keeps them beating that keep us alive… of course not us.. because we don’t even know when it will going to stop.???? if science can explain this simple things and find answer why humans die.. or why death happened…so you can say we are all like machines, but unfortunately we are not….

whatever science will found out in the future… this will all lead to failure because we are just part of the matrix :)

sino sa sangkatutak na “GOD” na nilikha ng mga tao para pagkakitaan ang iyong “DIYOS” – IDIOT????

dark particles? Its called aura. Its a common occurrence in migraine headaches and schizophrenia. Lumang tugtugin na yan chicken and egg theory. I mean the “which came first the chicken or the Egg ” Theory. This discovery enabled us to explain that mere presence of this Higgs Boson gives mass, or existence in layman’s term. Panu na yan may explanation na ang existence natin? And as to science leading to failure, I doubt that. Science is responsible why we have the internet and you can comment here. Without science, you wouldn’t be able to do that.

The quesion of “WHO” is a silly question.
