Smart to launch 4G wireless broadband in mid-2012

By:

MANILA, Philippines—Dominant mobile carrier Smart Communications Inc. is pushing through with the long-awaited nationwide launch of its fourth-generation (4G) wireless broadband network by the middle of the year.

In a statement, the company said most of the areas it covered would be LTE [long-term evolution]-ready before the second half of 2012, leading to faster connection speeds and better service quality for Smart’s nearly 50 million subscribers.

“This is a major component of the P67.1-billion network modernization of PLDT and Smart which we have accelerated and intend to complete within the year,” Smart technology group head Rolando Peña said.

Smart touts LTE as the most advanced 4G wireless technology available in the market today. The technology allows mobile subscribers to experience speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and above.

The company said subscribers would also be able to access High Speed Access Plus (HSPA+) wireless technology, in areas where LTE is unavailable. This can deliver speeds of up to 80 Mbps. The installation of either LTE or HSPA+ in different areas of the country will depend on demand from consumers, Peña said.

To make its network of over 13,000 base stations 4G-ready, Smart is installing Single Radio Access Network (Single RAN) base stations in all of its cell sites. Single RAN facilities can be easily upgraded to offer either HSPA+ or LTE services through software upgrades and some additional hardware equipment.

First and foremost question sa SMART or to any Philippine Telco claiming of 4G, LTE or even HSPA+.

Are your cell sites (up to the top of the cell tower) connected to the head-end via FIBER OPTIC cable?

If your answer is NO, then wala na tayong pag-uusapan regarding 3.5G/HSPA+/LTE or whatever “G” you want to release to the press. Everything about the speed you claim is totally KASINUNGALINGAN.

Smart and Globe and other lesser networks are making billions and billions of pesos out of their subscribers pocket without giving back to the government’s coffers. Yet, their service are all lousy even signals in the city center. Sometimes text messages take 5 hours and even one day before the recipient got them. I don’t think it’s because of the phone technology. Im using a Nokia smartphone 2011 model.

    • Pluma Mana

most of the time your recipient gets the same sms twice despite sending it once. hence you get charged twice also. this is a money making trick plays by the telcos.

That’s not quite true. According to Wikipedia,”Although commonly referred to as a type of 4G wireless service, LTE release 8 currently in use does not satisfy the requirements set forth by the ITU-R organization. Future releases of LTE (referred to as LTE Advanced) are expected to satisfy the requirements to be considered 4G.”

That clearly means, any network labeled as LTE is not really a 4G service but 3G. Just like an iPhone 4S. The latest iPhone smartphone isn’t a 4G compatible phone as most would like to believe.

i dont mind paying their fees kung ok sana ang service eh. eh kaso undelivered promise na nga, ang mahal pa ng rates. yung text message rates hindi nga maibaba eh, lalo na net rates. inutile is the  NTC. talk about regulatory trap. consumer welfare nonexistent. aside from the oil companies, tubong lugaw na itong mga telcos na ito

    major rip off…

  • Anonymous

Internet providers here can’t even keep the service they have up and running. Customer service is even worse. Who are they kidding? Just another ploy to rip people off. It’s not just Smart. All providers are basically the same and will remain so until they decide to truly compete with each other and give the promised service!

You rather should consider that the telecommunications sector in the Phils is a de facto monopoly.
