MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ fixed broadband and mobile median download speeds have improved in March, according to Ookla Speedtest Global Index.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ookla reported that the country’s fixed broadband median speed increased to 52.16Mbps in March from 49.10Mbps in February.
“The latest download speed signifies a 6.23% month-to-month increase in speed for fixed broadband. Average download speed for fixed broadband registered at 83.37Mbps,” said Ookla.
According to the firm, the latest fixed broadband median speed shows an improvement of 559.42 percent since July 2016.
Meanwhile, mobile median speed increased with a download speed of 19.38Mbps in March from 18.79 Mbps in February. Ookla said the latest median download speed shows a 3.14 percent month-to-month increase in speed for mobile.
The average download speed for mobile was recorded at 45.48Mbps. The latest mobile median speed represents an improvement of 160.48 percent since July 2016.
“The President’s announcement to streamline and speed up the issuance of LGU permits in July 2020 generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to February of this year vis-à-vis 2019,” said Ookla.
“Improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity,” it added.
