19-year-old student develops free alternative grammar-checking web app

In hopes of providing a useful and efficient tool for students like him, a 19-year-old student from San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan, has developed a web application that may become a great alternative to today’s popular grammar-checking apps.

Initiated by Arben Apura—a second-year information technology (IT) student at the Bulacan State University – Sarmiento Campus—the web application called “Top One Uwu” offers several features including a grammar fixer, content rephraser, content expander, content summarizer, essay writer, essay title generator and even a plagiarism checker.

Apura took to the Facebook group “Programming Philippines” on Sunday, Sept. 11, to share his project, which is now available for use.

He told the Inquirer in an interview that he was merely exploring “SvelteKit”—a framework for building web applications of all sizes—when he thought of creating his own site as a random project.

“[Noong dinedevelop] ko na po yung foundation ng site, naisip ko po na malaki po yung potential nito at malaki po yung benefits lalo na po sa mga students,” he explained.

(When I was developing the site’s foundation, I thought it had many potentials and benefits, especially for students.)

Unlike other existing grammar-checking applications that require users to upgrade their accounts to premium to gain access to additional features, Apura has opted to make his site free to use.

He added that by utilizing the free features offered by other services such as Supabase, OpenAI and Render, a “completely free” site can be achieved.

“Our website is designed to help students excel in their respective classes. By utilizing the provided features, students can make the most of their time and succeed in their studies,” he stated on his website.

‘Project Flex’

Apura’s Facebook post swiftly caught the attention of his fellow Filipino programmers—both aspirants and experts—and has gone viral, amassing over 23,000 reactions, 100 comments and over 36,000 shares as of this writing.

Many have expressed enthusiasm for Apura’s work and tested out his website right away. Some have, however,  experienced server errors and raised their concerns about the long-term sustainability of the project.

Overwhelmed by netizens’ support and appreciation for his work, Apura has taken the time to respond to all of their queries and suggestions, which would help him further improve the site.

He also clarified that his project is still under development, with more features to be implemented in the coming days.

Apura is likewise looking for sponsors for his website, which could help him make a lot of progress in developing new features and improving existing ones, as well as maintaining the application programming interface that his website uses.

The Top One Uwu web app can be accessed here: toponeuwu.online. Those who want to show their support and provide sponsorship for Apura’s project may reach out to him by sending a message to his Facebook account.  /ra
