Xiaomi Concept Phone Features Full-Size Lens

06:11 AM November 03, 2022

The Chinese tech company Xiaomi has been providing affordable and innovative gadgets worldwide. Now, it may push boundaries again with its 12S Ultra smartphone.

It boasts a powerful camera system from the German company Leica. Yesterday, Xiaomi introduced a lens attachment similar to the ones professional photographers use.

The Xiaomi presenter said the accessory turns the Xiaomi concept phone into a “professional photo-making tool.” Unlike competitors, it would offer an “authentic depth of field.”

The Chinese smartphone company released a YouTube video explaining its concept product. It would enable a 12S Ultra prototype to connect with a full-size lens.

Xiaomi said its concept would use its AI Image Solution to process photographs. Moreover, it would have the ability to capture images in 10-bit RAW.

The lens accessory would integrate with the 12S Ultra camera app, allowing features like zebra lines, focus peaking, and a histogram.

Some online influencers have shared photos of themselves handling the Xiaomi concept phone. It looks exactly like what a smartphone with a full-size lens would look like.

The phone has a huge tube sticking out the back. You attach the accessory by twisting off the ring around the built-in lens and then attaching that instead.

You may twist that to adjust the focus manually, similar to how a DSLR camera works. According to Engadget, each unit costs roughly 30,000 yuan or $41,210.

Why place a full-size lens on the Xiaomi concept phone?

The company wants to use optical zoom since most smartphones use digital zoom. They take high-definition images and increase the size.

The problem is that digital zoom often sacrifices so much detail. That is why most professional photographers prefer optical zoom.

Their cameras move their lenses to focus on subjects. As a result, pros capture more details without compromising image quality.

I posted a recent article comparing the iPhone 14 Pro and the Google Pixel 7 Pro. I mentioned that the latter is best for photographing scenery due to its excellent optical zoom.

The Xiaomi concept phone may do the same with its attachable lens. However, users must ensure that the built-in camera does not get smudged or scratched.

Otherwise, it may affect the quality of photos taken with the accessory. Also, professional photographers are more likely to appreciate the full-size lens than regular people.

Conclusion

Xiaomi did not confirm mass production of the 12S Ultra prototype. We will not know its true features until it launches.

You do not need to wait for the Xiaomi concept phone. You may choose existing smartphones with powerful cameras, like the Google Pixel 7 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro.
