MANILA, Philippines — The internet speed in the country improved in December 2022, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on Thursday.

Citing data from the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report, the NTC said in a statement that the country’s fixed broadband median speed rose to 87.13 megabits per second (mbps) in December from November’s 81.42 mbps.

Meanwhile, the NTC said that the mobile median speed also increased, reaching 25.12 mbps in December compared to the 24.04 mbps the month before.

“The continued improvement in internet speed is a welcome development as President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Jr. encourages the country to embrace digitalization if it wants to survive and thrive in a post-pandemic economy,” said NTC Officer-in-Charge Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez.

The NTC attributed this internet speed pickup to the faster issuance of local government unit permits to telecommunications companies, which allowed them to build infrastructure that boosted connectivity, such as cell towers and fiber optic networks.

Marcos said in his State of the Nation Address last July 2022 that the digital divide among Filipinos should be tackled by the Department of Information and Communications Technology.
