How to improve your writing with AI

I have a confession to make: I have been using ChatGPT to write my content for years. Yet, that shouldn’t come as a surprise as most writers use artificial intelligence to produce their articles, too. We recognize we’re in the age of AI, so we must use this technology to our advantage. As many experts say, “AI will not replace you; someone using AI will.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean I let artificial intelligence create my content. My words came from my keystrokes, but I used AI to check for grammatical errors and other issues. Also, this technology lets me reach more audiences worldwide. Similarly, you should see how AI can improve your writing at work and in school.

I will show how you can produce better text with AI with a few simple steps. Later, I will explain the risks of AI writing and how you can use it ethically.

The 10 ways to enhance writing with AI

  1. Brainstorm ideas to beat writer’s block
  2. Research faster and easier
  3. Check grammar and other errors
  4. Receive feedback on your writing
  5. Improve your understanding of complex topics
  6. Facilitate repetitive tasks
  7. Adjust your content for different audiences
  8. Simulate dialogue between characters

1. Brainstorm ideas to beat writer’s block

Imagine you’re about to write your research paper or school presentation. You sit down and open your word processing program but find yourself without anything to type.

That phenomenon is called writer’s block, and even professionals face it daily. Fortunately, that’s a thing of the past thanks to ChatGPT and similar tools.

Ask the bot what you could write for a specific topic. Alternatively, you could request a sample paper so that you have a clear picture of what your content should look like.

2. Research faster and easier

Another problem with writing a school paper, news article, or blog is research. Believe it or not, gathering information can take more time than writing content.

Fortunately, we’ve released a technology specifically designed to collect and analyze data. Even better, modern AI chatbots can access the Internet.

For example, the world’s favorite search engine, Google, released a new chatbot. That means it could perform research and write content based on online sources. Make sure you specify that the bot should cite sources, though!

3. Check grammar and other errors

Write articles for an extended period, and you’re likely to make grammatical and spelling mistakes. Previously, you’d have to comb through your text to find them.

Nowadays, our word processing software has built-in grammar and spelling detectors. Artificial intelligence improved them significantly by detecting redundancies and recommending simplifications.

For example, type “vision and goals of the company,” and the AI would likely suggest “company’s vision” instead. You don’t have to download new tools because Microsoft Word and other staple text editors have built-in AI.

Some install Grammarly extensions on their Google Docs to have quick recommendations while writing.

4. Receive feedback on your writing

As its namesake, you can chat with ChatGPT. After all, people use it by asking questions, so why not extend it into full-blown conversations?

That is why you can ask the bot to check your content. State your goals to improve the results. For example, let’s say you need a college-level paper on global supply chains. You may enter this prompt:

“I am a college student studying Economics, and I made a research paper on global supply chains. Check if my style and word choice fit college level and recommend ways to improve my paper below.”

Then, copy and paste your draft below that prompt. ChatGPT should comment on your writing style and suggest revisions. Also, learn more about AI bot prompting in my guide.

5. Improve your understanding of complex topics

Let’s continue the previous example regarding the global supply chain paper. ChatGPT may have recommended putting more details about product transportation and tariffs.

You could look for online sources explaining these concepts or let the AI bot explain them. As a result, you can get answers immediately.

You may also ask the bot to simplify its explanation if it gives a complicated one. As a result, you spend less time researching information and more time writing.

6. Facilitate repetitive tasks

Students usually follow specific formats for their homework, and employees may stick to a certain template for their content. Search engine optimization experts ensure their articles reach the top of online search results.

Upwork says artificial intelligence can facilitate these repetitive tasks by setting templates. For example, ChatGPT saves your past chats, so you can copy and paste previous templates from them.

Use customized instructions to ensure results follow specific rules. For example, you could tell the bot to provide SEO-friendly results. Learn more about this feature on my other content.

7. Adjust your content for different audiences

Sometimes, you must rewrite old content for other purposes. For example, you might need your paper to suit an academic journal for your thesis.

You can ask ChatGPT to revise your content to fit a different audience. For example, you can prepare your supply chain paper for your term paper with this prompt:

“Rewrite the paper below to have word choices and a writing style that fits an academic journal.” Then, put your existing content below, click the Submit button, and wait for your results.

8. Simulate dialogue between characters

I’ve been discussing non-fiction content for the majority of this article, so let’s delve into fiction. ChatGPT is surprisingly good at writing fantastical stories.

Consequently, some used AI to publish their first children’s books. Alternatively, you could ask ChatGPT to help you write dialogue. Tell it to play the role of your character by sharing their characteristics.

Then, pretend you’re another character in your story and submit applicable comments. Repeat until you’ve built an exchange for one of your scenes.

9. Translate your content into different languages

The digital age enables everyone to avail of products and services worldwide. That is why businesses, content creators, and others try to branch out to other countries.

That means you will have to translate your content into different languages. Fortunately, ChatGPT and other AI bots can understand and translate into non-English languages.

You may also ask these programs to speak in your native tongue. However, you may need to ask someone proficient in the language to avoid grammatical errors.

10. Add unique images to your work

We’ve covered AI text generators, but generative AI has advanced enough to create other media. Nowadays, artificial intelligence can create pictures, videos, and even music.

We’ll focus on images because those can illustrate your content and engage readers. Open Stable Diffusion and DALL-E online, then describe the image you want.

In response, they will provide at least four samples based on your description. Alternatively, submit an existing image and tell these programs to edit in a specific way.

Frequently asked questions about AI writing

What are the benefits of AI writing?

The most important benefit of using AI for writing is automating repetitive tasks, such as grammar checking and templates. Consequently, you save time on these activities so that you can focus on writing. Also, you may ask AI programs to give you topic suggestions whenever you can’t figure out what to write.

What are the issues with AI writing?

Gizchina says the most glaring AI writing risk is overreliance on technology. People may not be able to write anything without these tools, especially students learning how to write. Moreover, your writing may lose personality and authenticity. AI typically prioritizes simplicity, so it may remove word choices and writing styles that make your content unique.

How do I write with AI ethically?

AI professionals agree that people should only use artificial intelligence for inspiration. You may ask for writing samples, but you must not use those as your final content. Moreover, students should comply with their school guidelines regarding artificial intelligence. Similarly, employees should follow company AI regulations.
