Cybertruck’s supervised self-driving feature open to select users

Select Cybertruck drivers gained the ability to drive on US highways hands-free, thanks to the new supervised self-driving feature.

Tesla AI head Ashok Elluswamy wrote on X that these EVs will be the first Tesla cars to receive the “end-to-end on highway” feature.

Soon, the company will likely expand the software update to include more Tesla vehicles worldwide. This upgrade may reach the Philippines as Tesla builds a store in Uptown Bonifacio, Taguig.

How does the Cybertruck’s supervised FSD work?

Tech news website Wired explains the feature was available in preorders for $7,000. After a year’s wait, these drivers can subscribe to the Full Self-Driving or FSD (Supervised) feature at $99.

As the name suggests, people should only use the self-driving feature while paying attention to the road. Otherwise, the Cybertruck reportedly turns off FSD.

Previously, critics have argued Tesla’s marketing incorrectly leads drivers to assume FSD would let the truck drive itself. Also, they alleged the automaker hasn’t been putting more effort into preventing driver misuse.

Cybertruck owners may anticipate the latest FSD version 12.5.5 as it adds other features like a vision-based attention monitoring system for drivers wearing sunglasses.

Tech insider The Verge says FSD v12 supposedly uses “end-to-end neural nets.” The feature only uses artificial intelligence and cameras and no additional sensors.  

The video above shows the supervised self-driving feature in action. Note that the driver had to intervene when the vehicle made a wrong turn at an intersection.

Tesla plans to release a more advanced v13 FSD version for its vehicles in October, making it an ideal time for Filipinos to drive a Tesla in Manila.

The website says the EV manufacturer may launch sales by the end of 2024. Moreover, the official Tesla website lists job openings located in Taguig, in time for the upcoming showroom.
