How to stop motion sickness while using your phone on long trips

A long trip usually causes motion sickness, especially when you’re using your smartphone. 

However, hours in a car can become boring, so it’s hard to resist passing the time by scrolling on social media or watching videos.

Avoid motion sickness while on the phone

Apple users can activate the built-in feature called Motion Cues to address motion sickness:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Then, tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Motion and then select Show Vehicle Motion Cues
  4. Select whether you want it On, Off or Automatic (they turn on when needed).

Activating Motion Cues will display a message on top of the screen and place several dark dots on it.

Moreover, you can set up easy access to Motion Cues with these steps:

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen. 
  2. Next, tap the + button from the top right corner. 
  3. Select the + button in the top left.
  4. Then, drag the Motion Cues control under the Vision Accessibility section. Its icon looks like a car with dots beside it. 

These steps will let you toggle Motion Cues by swiping down on your phone, instead of navigating the Settings app.

Tech Insider Digital Trends says Google is developing a motion sickness app for Android. 

The company hasn’t released it at the time of writing, so you may try third-party apps for this condition.

However, choose carefully to avoid malware and other cyber threats.

  • Sit in the front seats.
  • Choose a window seat on flights and trains. 
  • Try lying down, closing your eyes, looking at the horizon or sleeping. 
  • Drink water and limit caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat small amounts of food regularly.
  • Avoid smoking, even for a short period. 
  • Distract yourself with activities like listening to music.
  • Chew on flavored lozenges like candy.

Website University of California–Davis says motion sickness occurs when your eyes and inner ear can’t figure out whether you’re moving or not. 

As a result, it can lead to dizziness, sweating, nausea and headaches.
