MANILA, PHILIPPINES — PAGASA and CAAP are tapping the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) for a possible collaboration on Philippines’ cyclone monitoring capabilities.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) say it will also enhance safety in the aviation sector.

The Philippine News Agency reports the HKO is renowned for its expertise in weather forecasting and warnings on related hazards.

PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando says working with this agency will enable the Philippines to use dropsonde technology.

“…and drop some sensors to gather atmospheric parameters to determine or study its intensity, and (identify) if there are changes, including in the speed and direction,” he explained.

He says the country doesn’t have it because it’s too expensive.
