Mapua talks about AI applications in Philippine medical education
MAKATI, Philippines — On March 4, 2025, Mapua University in Makati City held an event titled, “Shaping the Future of Healthcare through AI-Driven Innovations in Medical Education.”
This symposium explored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare education.

Ayedee Domingo MD, MBA, the Managing Director and Metahelix Adjunct Professor at the Mapua School of Medicine, explained how the school uses AI.
How medical education uses AI

He says Mapua follows this rule of thumb:
“If the use of AI will assist in the learning process, it’s allowed. Otherwise, it’s not allowed.”
Allowed medical education use cases include data analysis, pattern recognition and generating insights.
For instance, students may use AI to translate foreign words and serve as virtual tutors.
On the other hand, inappropriate applications may interfere with the following matters:
- Foundational skills like remembering and understanding lessons
- Application of concepts
- Development of critical thinking skills
For example, students should not use artificial intelligence for oral exams and discussion-based activities.
Domingo listed these use cases for medical students:
- Chatbots
- Intelligent tutoring systems
- Virtual patients
- Gamification
- Adaptive learning systems
- Research
Meanwhile, medical faculty can use artificial intelligence for the following purposes:
- Automated essay scrutiny
- Quizzing
- Virtual reality
- Simulation assessment
- Diagnostic skill assessment
- Content generation
- Research
The Managing Director at the Mapua School of Medicine also discussed Mapua’s journal policies on AI:
- Authorship: AI tools do not qualify for authorship.
- Accountability: Authors are accountable for their work, including any content produced by AI tools.
- Disclosure: The use of AI tools must be disclosed.
- Integrity: The use of AI tools should not compromise research integrity.
- Policy Evolution: Policies on AI use are subject to change as the field evolves.
Lastly, Domingo concluded his discussion on AI and medical education with a quote from Fei Fei Li, the Chief Scientist of AI at Google Cloud:
“AI won’t replace humans, but humans who use AI will replace those who don’t.”
