DOST convenes Mindanao researchers to address regional research gaps
MANILA, Philippines — Researchers from Northern Mindanao gathered at the 2026 Mindanao Cluster Call Conference to discuss research and development (R&D) gaps in the region and align local priorities with the country’s national science and technology agenda.

Organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and hosted by DOST Caraga, the conference brought together scientists, engineers, and regional stakeholders to focus on key sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, and emerging technologies.
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang outlined the Mindanao Cluster’s priority research areas, with particular focus on Northern Mindanao’s development needs.
Among the priorities highlighted was strengthening the region’s position as an industrial hub, particularly through the development of 5G and 6G ecosystems and the continued metropolitan growth of Cagayan de Oro City.
“The industrial hub, focusing on 5G/6G ecosystems and Cagayan de Oro’s metropolitan development, should be prioritized to foster growth in the region’s digital infrastructure and urban planning,” Mabborang said.
Science and innovation for national development
Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the role of science, technology, and innovation in advancing national development and improving the lives of Filipinos.
“Science, technology, and innovation must directly serve the Filipino people while protecting lives, strengthening industries, and creating quality jobs” Solidum said.
He also highlighted the importance of showcasing Filipino talent and recognizing the contributions of local researchers in driving innovation.
“Our goal is that Filipino talent is at the center of national development. But this is not one agency’s job; it is only through the collective efforts of our Filipino researchers, scientists, and engineers” Solidum added.
During the conference, researchers from Northern Mindanao presented proposed R&D projects and received feedback from DOST experts and sectoral councils. The proposals aimed to address region-specific challenges while promoting sustainable development and technological innovation.
The Mindanao Cluster Call Conference is part of a nationwide series of consultations also conducted in Luzon and the Visayas. The initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration between national agencies and regional research institutions while ensuring that local development needs are reflected in the country’s broader science and technology agenda.
With continued participation in these initiatives, Northern Mindanao researchers are expected to gain access to future funding opportunities and support for projects that can advance regional development.
The Department of Science and Technology–Northern Mindanao (DOST-10) is one of the regional offices of DOST tasked with delivering science-based and innovative solutions that promote human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability under the agency’s OneDOST4U: Solutions and Opportunities for All program.
