Path of Exile 2 is getting a major endgame overhaul and several QoL upgrades with Patch 0.5, Return of the Ancients, launching on May 29.
Developer Grinding Gear Games revealed the update will rework core endgame progression systems, including the Atlas. The patch introduces new corrupted zones, redesigned progression paths, new pinnacle encounters, and changes to several league mechanics already present in the game.
One of the biggest additions is the introduction of Ancient Strongholds, large endgame areas tied to the new progression structure. These locations contain upgraded enemies, unique modifiers, and new boss encounters tied to the patch’s “Ancients” theme. Completing them rewards new Atlas progression options and higher-tier loot.
The Atlas itself is also being adjusted for Path of Exile 2 letting players explore the world with greater freedom. Patch 0.5 restructures map progression and adds more direct control over pathing and encounter selection. Players even get access to ships to explore Islands around the world.
Several existing mechanics are being reworked alongside the Atlas changes. Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition are all receiving balance updates and reward adjustments. Enemy density, scaling, and encounter pacing are also being tuned as part of the patch.
Newer players will also find this is the best time to get into the dense world of Path of Exile 2. With an In-Game Build Planner and several more tips and sings across the map, the newcomers won’t feel too overwhelmed checking out Path of Exile 2 for the first time.
The first new Ascendancy is the Martial Artist for the Monk. This allows another flavor for the Monk and redefines combat with their firsts. One new ability allows the Martial Artist to channel Hollow Form Technique to create Illusions of himself which then use a skill of your choosing, perfect for turning skills with less area of effect, into ones that can obliterate packs with ease.
The next ability is the Way of the Stonefist will cause your gloves to become a new base type when equipped. Each modifier on the original pair of gloves has an equivalent more powerful and more impactful modifier. This is an absolute dream of a roleplay build for players who definitely want to let their fists do the talking.
The second Ascendancy revealed is the Huntress’s Spirit Walker which was my personal favorite part of the reveal. The Spirit Walker uses Azmerian animal spirits tied to three Wisp types: Primal, Vivid, and Wild. Each path grants abilities linked to the Stag, Owl, or Bear spirits. Players build up spirit wisps through abilities, then consume them for stronger effects. The Stag summons stampedes during attacks, the Owl grants feather boons that improve projectiles, and the Bear summons a large bear companion.
But this is when the Spirit Walker makes her Path of Exile 2 experience truly unique. The Spirit walker having attuned herself with nature can gain the ability to Tame Beast Bosses, opening up a whole suite of very cool options for your build! Each Boss will have different abilities for you to experiment with and its up to the players to find out which works best for them. You can then put your tamed bosses against other bosses for a unique version of Pokémon in Path of Exile 2.
The update adds new over 30 new unique items, support gems, crafting options, and additional endgame modifiers. This includes over 15 new Bosses and Pinnacles.
The meaty Patch 0.5 is a meaty patch that will bring loads of content that will keep players busy heading into 2026’s November ExileCon in Auckland, New Zealand. With ExileCon happening during Grinding Gear Games’s 20th Anniversary fans are largely expecting a 1.0 reveal to happen then.
