Bar passers Habeas Corpuz, Nat King Coles tickle Twittersphere

MANILA, Philippines—Their names may evoke a few grins and laughter, but they are now eligible to be part of one very serious profession.

As the Supreme Court released the list containing the names of the newest batch of lawyers, two names buried under so much identities, managed to send the Twitter universe into frenzy and put the bar tilted to their social media favor.

Listed alphabetically, Bar passer No. 270 Nat King Coles, whose parents probably had a field day taking advantage of their last name, and Bar passer No. 285 Habeas Corpuz, whose parents might have had the gift of foresight, have tickled the funny bones of netizens.

It is still not known what the rankings of the two are, but they have had a share of the limelight with the 2013 Bar topnotchers because of their quirky names.

Corpuz is a professor in the University of the Visayas.

One lawyer who goes by the Twitter name Jong D.G. hailed Corpuz for bearing a pun-inducing name perfect for their profession.

“Atty. Habeas Corpuz for the petitioner, Your Honor,” he posted. “Winner.”

Another Twitter user is still dumbfounded by Corpuz’ name.

“Are we being bluffed? Atty. Habeas Corpuz?” a perplexed Laila Guinomla asked.

Twitter user Tracy dela Cruz has found her favorite names among the 1,174 passers.

“My favorite names in the Bar Results list: Habeas Corpuz and Nat King Coles,” dela Cruz posted. “Congratulations to the new lawyers!”
