MANILA, Philippines –The growth of eCommerce in the country continues to develop as internet penetration and smart phone usage rises. This progress has given opportunity to many startups and merchants to take their businesses online and reach more customers as online shopping becomes more popular among Filipinos.

Unfortunately, this growth has also drawn the unwanted attention of hackers who are capable of easily extracting an online shopper’s credit card details from a remote location. Businesses that only rely on SSL certificates to protect sensitive information, might soon find themselves in hot water if they fail to recognize that such threats are present in their daily operation.

“In an increasingly connected world, the threat of card data breach will always be present and inevitable,” says Mr. Mau San Andres, Senior Manager for Sales and Marketing of AsiaPay Philippines. “To address such challenges, we’ve developed MemberPay, a data security service that provides merchants the capability to protect their customer’s sensitive data against targeted attacks,” says San Andres.

MemberPay is a value-added service available exclusively on PesoPay, AsiaPay’s payment gateway platform built to serve Philippine-based merchants.

A Secure Payment Environment for Everyone

MemberPay provides a secure payment space not only for merchants but also for online shoppers. Through a process known as tokenization, sensitive cardholder data such as card number, expiry date and cardholder’s name are encrypted at the point of capture. Then, the encrypted data is securely transmitted to AsiaPay’s PCI DSS compliant servers where it is given a substitute value called a token. The token then acts as a proxy to the original card number and can be used to complete succeeding online transactions.

MemberPay removes the need to save a cardholder’s data on a merchant’s server thereby significantly reducing credit card vulnerability and chances of data breach. Also, even if the tokenized data gets stolen, nothing is compromised since the token has no actual value.

Beyond Data Security

The benefits of using tokenization are not only limited to online security. PesoPay merchants who utilize MemberPay will be able to streamline the checkout process by enabling online shoppers to deviate from the long and tedious process of typing their payment details whenever they make online purchases.

MemberPay also reduces the digital footprint of the payment card data as it travels from one server to another for auditing. This process greatly decreases the cost and scope of PCI DSS compliance for online merchants. Furthermore, the tokenized data can still be used in analyzing incoming payment transactions to track fraudsters.

“As eCommerce continues to evolve in our country, we expect that more merchants will adopt this technology in order to boost online shopping confidence and safeguard the card data of their customers,” says Mr. San Andres.
