Asked about Doyle, police said: “A 46-year-old man was arrested at his home address in Croydon on Wednesday, 23 March on suspicion of inciting racial hatred on social media.”

Doyle had described on Twitter confronting a Muslim woman in south London and asking her to explain the Brussels attack. She said the attack had nothing to do with her, and he said that was “a mealy mouthed response.”

The description of this encounter on Twitter drew wide attention, with many mocking the posting. He used a familiar anti-Muslim epithet in a subsequent tweet.

The tweets have been deleted. Doyle has not been charged.
