A new app from Google allows families and close friends to keep track of their loved ones to know if they are doing fine and are safe.

Once installed, the app lets users add “trusted” individuals into a list that would enable them to monitor their loved ones’ status should they be in unsafe places or doing activities like solo hiking. A trusted contact may also request for a user’s location in the event that the user has not kept in touch for an extended period of time. If safe, users can simply deny the request.

The app also works when the user’s smartphone is offline. Trusted contacts may send a location request and it will show the user’s last known location before the device went offline.

Thanks to the app’s real-time tracking system, as long as a user is online he/she can ask a trusted contact to monitor his progress when going through a particularly dangerous area.

The Trusted Contacts app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. The iOS version is not yet available, but prospective users may ask to be notified once the app is ready on the Apple App Store.  Alfred Bayle
