Instagram now allows users to download the information from their account.
The Facebook-owned social media platform followed in the footsteps of its parent company through the new Data Download feature. For now, users may download everything they ever uploaded through a web browser. Data Download will become available to iOS and Android at a later date.
Users may also access the feature through the privacy settings. The download archive will include photos, videos, archived stories posted after December 2017, post and story captions, contacts, usernames of followers and followed users, Direct messages, non-disappearing Direct message photos and videos, likes, searches and account settings.
In comparison, Facebook launched the Download Your Information feature in 2010. The company acquired Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion.
The new feature has the potential to help users clear up their account and move on to another social media platform. It also allows Instagram to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law in Europe, which takes effect on May 25, reports TechCrunch.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp created its own Data Download tool for GDPR compliance. The company will also increase minimum age requirement to use the app from 13 to 16 years old. Alfred Bayle /ra
