PLDT, Smart win Speedtest awards for fastest internet in Philippines

The Philippine Long Distance Telecommunications (PLDT) company and its subsidiary Smart Communications earned recognition from Ookla Speedtest for having the fastest fixed and wireless internet service in the Philippines.

The Speedtest awards covered service performance for the first half of 2018 for fixed and mobile networks. PLDT won the award for the fixed network category in the Philippines and received a speed score of 17.31. The score is calculated by taking the download and upload speed value into consideration. Top download speeds for PLDT were recorded at 53.07 megabits per second, while upload speeds were at 54.31 megabits per second.

Meanwhile, its subsidiary Smart received the award for the mobile network category with a speed score of 14.98. Average download speeds for Smart were recorded at 17.25 megabits per second, while upload speeds were at 7.65 megabits per second.

When compared with the award winners from other countries within the Southeast Asian region, Thailand’s AIS service came close to Smart with a score of 14.65. On the other hand, Bangladesh’s Grameenphone received the lowest score at 9.25.

On the Speedtest Global Index, Qatar dominated the list with the fastest mobile network, which has a download speed of 63.22 megabits per second. Meanwhile, Singapore continues to sit at the top spot for fixed broadband with a top download speed of 180.57 megabits per second.  /ra
