The road to 100 begins with a landscape
As it approaches its centennial year in 2028, the Camera Club of the Philippines (CCP) presents Landscapes, a photographic exhibition that turns its gaze toward the spaces that define who we are. Now showcased at the Antonio Gallery at Century City Mall in Makati, the exhibit is both a celebration of place and a reflection on the enduring relationship between people and the environments they inhabit.
Founded in 1928, CCP is the country’s oldest photography society and one of the world’s longest continuously operating photography organizations. Across nearly a century, its members have documented the Philippines in all its complexity—its people, traditions, cities, coastlines, mountains, and moments of transformation—building a rich visual archive of a nation in motion.
Appropriately, Landscapes serves as the opening chapter in a series of exhibitions leading up to the Club’s 100th anniversary. The choice of theme is intentional. Every story begins somewhere, and landscapes are often the silent protagonists of our collective narrative. They shape communities, influence culture, and bear witness to history long before—and long after—we pass through them.
For photographers, landscapes occupy a special place within the craft. They are often where the journey starts: a lesson in patience, in waiting for the right light; a lesson in perspective, in understanding how space, weather, and time can transform a scene. Landscape photography asks not merely that one look, but that one truly see.
The works on display move beyond postcard beauty. They examine the varied character of the Philippine landscape—from rugged mountain ranges and tranquil coastlines to expansive rural settings and ever-evolving urban horizons. Together, they reveal places that are at once familiar and extraordinary, reminding viewers that landscapes are not simply backgrounds but living repositories of memory, identity, and meaning.
The exhibition also reflects the Club’s longstanding culture of exploration. Through decades of photographic excursions and its storied “On The Spot” competitions, members have traversed the archipelago, documented the country’s diverse geography and preserved fleeting moments for future generations. In doing so, they have contributed not only to the art of photography but also to the visual history of the nation.
