‘Typhoon’ in Facebook’s 2013 top topics

MANILA, Philippines—Supertyphoon “Yolanda” not only devastated several areas in the Visayas but also took the cyberspace audience by storm.
The keyword “Typhoon” which pertained to “Yolanda” (international name Haiyan) landed fourth in Facebook’s Most Talked about Topics.
Pope Francis, who took over Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI after the latter resigned, topped the list of Most Talked about Topics.
The keyword “Election” took second place after it appeared in multiple languages with high-profile national elections in India, Kenya, Iran and Italy.
The newest member of the British crown rounded out the podium as “Royal Baby” made it third. It pertained to the child of the most famous royal couple in the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s child Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.
Nelson Mandela, who passed away last December 5, was on the 10th spot of Facebook’s top topics.
Another world leader, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, clinched the fifth spot of the year’s topics after she passed away last April 8, 2013.
The bombing during this year’s Boston Marathon, which prompted the phrase “Boston Strong,” put the sporting event on the eighth spot on the list.
The Tour de France, the largest cycling event in the world, got even bigger in 2013 as a roundabout around the Arc de Triomphe was included.
Dance craze Harlem Shake and controversial performer Miley Cyrus rounded out the list taking the sixth and seventh places respectively.
The social networking site tallied all mentions of the topics in the year and ranked the total number of mentions.
