“The next time something like this happens, do reflect on why even the worst criminal is entitled to be represented by a lawyer, and why whatever hate you may have for that person should NEVER extend to someone who is just doing his duty under our laws,” he said.

In an interview in a morning talk show, Fortun admitted that he was affected by the criticisms published online against him.

“They seemed to have failed to understand that the right to freedom to express their opinion does not include the right to destroy the reputation for the wrong reason,” he said.

On Twitter, many were also pleased with his resignation.

“Fortun just made the right decision,” said Plaeya Magos (@plaeyaHOLIC).

Another Twitter user (@ANNthologist) said, “I admire the bravery of Atty. Fortun. I bet he chose his conscience over the money offered by Cedric Lee. Not all lawyers can do that. Bravo.”

“Great move, Atty. Fortun. The case is getting lame,” said Paula C. (@polapolapola).

But others pointed out that Fortun probably dropped the case because he realized it was a losing fight.
