Retro-modern RPG “Lost Sphear”, creepy survival experience “The Inpatient”, slick-looking indie action games “Iconoclasts” and “Celeste”, animé adaptation “Dragon Ball FighterZ”, and ambitious open-world epic “Monster Hunter World” all arrive on the week of Jan. 23, 2018.

Lost Sphear (international release)

Following “I Am Setsuna”, Square Enix’s modern-looking 2016 take on retro classics “Chrono Trigger” and “Final Fantasy”. this role-playing game offers a similar approach to icons of the genre.

A hospital-themed psychological horror for virtual reality from the developer behind earlier forest scarefest “Until Dawn”, and set some 60 years beforehand.

Is this the latest small-team success? In development for seven years and looking very good indeed, “Iconoclasts” has players take charge of spanner-wielding Robin as she finds out why her hobbies have been outlawed.

Celeste

From Jan. 25
The next game from “Towerfall” creator Matt Thorson and designed to be a hard-as-nails challenge as players guide Madeline up the trap-ridden Celeste Mountain on a dangerous mystery-solving quest.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

From Jan. 26
Better known as creator of iconic fighting game franchises “Guilty Gear” and “BlazBlue”, Arc System Works looks like it is on the verge of recreating the “Dragon Ball” video game franchise as a team-versus fighting game with tournament potential.

Monster Hunter World
For PlayStation 4, Xbox One
From Jan. 26. On Windows PC late 2018.
The latest and most lavish attempt to broaden the “Monster Hunter” audience, already huge in Japan and on handhelds, now pursuing new fans on home console with its heady blend of open-world adventuring, exotic beasts and weapon upgrades. JB
