A zoo in New Orleans in the United States is hosting an online baby shower for its pregnant gorilla as she prepares to welcome her baby.
Tumani and her mate Okpara were expecting their child “any time” now, the Audubon Zoo said on Facebook last Thursday, Aug. 13, alongside a short video of the female gorilla.
“As we wait, you can help and get involved by checking out her online baby registry,” it said.
The animal center also noted on its website that the upcoming baby will be the first western lowland gorilla to be born there in over 20 years. The World Wildlife Fund classifies the said species as critically endangered.
Tumani’s baby registry features gifts both for her and her future infant. Among the items on the list are blankets, feeder bags, teether keyrings and a sandbox.
The zoo is also asking for donations for baby food and other supplies such as peanut butter, raisins and medicines. Along with providing Tumani with the necessary items to help raise her child, the zoo will use some of the funds raised for other animals as well.
“Audubon spends about $70,000 per month to feed our animals. Your gift will buy nutritious food and vital medicine for one of our newest addition along with all the other animals you love to visit,” it explained.
Following its call for donations, the center said it had received an overwhelming response, which led to an update in the registry.
The zoo then assured the public that its animal care experts work with Tumani daily. The exercises are designed to keep her mind active and prepare her for motherhood. /ra
