Yahoo Groups is set to be gone for good by Dec. 15, 2020.

The announcement from Verizon was made today, Oct. 14, on the Yahoo Groups site and in emails sent to Yahoo Groups users. Verizon purchased Yahoo in 2017 for $4.5 billion.

The online platform, launched in 2001, allowed users to post messages, upload files and photos, make polls and create mailing lists.

However, the rise of social networks and other platforms for online groups has edged out users from Yahoo Groups as it remained stagnant.

Verizon has been transitioning users out of Yahoo Groups, announcing in 2019 that users could not create new content on the site after Oct. 21 and that all content would be removed on Dec. 14, 2019. All groups have also been restricted.

Following today’s announcement, users can no longer create new groups, though emails can still be sent and received among members of a group. By Dec. 15, 2020, the website will not be accessible.

Yahoo boasted 115 million Yahoo Groups users in 2010, but the company, once an internet giant, has seen its business decline throughout the 2000s.  /ra
