Globe eLibrary introduces children to data privacy and security

04:40 PM February 05, 2021

With children spending more time online for learning and entertainment, they are now more vulnerable to cybercriminals who gather personal information that threatens the wellbeing of innocent people. This prompted Globe eLibrary to include data privacy and security for children in its list of books that are available to read or download for free.

Entitled Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy, the book aims to help children aged 7-12 better understand the concept of data privacy and security in a fun and engaging way. It includes information on the importance of keeping personal data secure, how such information may be compromised, what the child and parents can do to avoid becoming a victim, and how to address the concern if it happens. It is available in both print and electronic formats.

The book was created through the joint efforts of Globe, the National Privacy Commission, and the Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS). The artwork on the cover of the book is by Liza Flores, as commissioned by CANVAS.

“It is important to facilitate deeper learning and awareness about data privacy and security among children as early as possible so that they will grow to be vigilant in protecting themselves on the internet,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

The inclusion of Safe Kids in Globe eLibrary is part of the ongoing efforts of Globe to keep children safe online. Globe, through its Digital Thumbprint Program, helps children, the youth, their parents, and teachers learn and practice digital citizenship, online safety, and responsible use of the internet.

Globe eLibrary was launched in April last year primarily to help students get access to resource materials during the pandemic. It contains textbooks on core subjects such as Math, Science, English, Filipino, Music, and Arts that are fit for K-12 students as well as local and international storybooks.

It also offers interactive videos on Math, Science, English, Values, and Hygiene and Sanitation incorporating sights and sounds that are familiar to students to help supplement classroom learning. Some of these videos were developed by teachers themselves.

The eBooks and videos are available for free at the Globe eLibrary website https://globeelibrary.ph/ or mobile app. They may also be downloaded for offline learning. Globe or TM customers may access the Globe eLibrary from their mobile phone without incurring data charges.

Globe is a strong advocate of quality education (UN SDG 4) which is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that Globe committed to support. To know more about Globe sustainability efforts, visit https://www.globe.com.ph/about-us/sustainability.html
