Globe 5G network logs over 2M devices in Q1 2022
Globe has logged over two million devices in its 5G network as of end-March this year, ahead of target, showing that many customers are already enjoying the higher speed, lower latency, and more reliable data service that the new technology brings.
At least 96% of the National Capital Region and 85% of key cities in Visayas and Mindanao now have Globe 5G outdoor coverage. The digital solutions platform has also allocated a large portion of the P89 billion in capital expenditures this year to roll out more 5G sites and in-building solutions, upgrade more cell towers to 4G LTE, add more 4G cell sites, and lay down more fiber to the home lines.
This buildup is part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which highlights how infrastructure and innovation are key in driving economic growth and development under SDG No. 9.
“We anticipate higher 5G device penetration among our customers this year with the continuous expansion of 5G coverage in the country and the release of more affordable handsets,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.
For more people to benefit from 5G, Globe has made several entry-level and mid-range 5G models available for free if subscribed to a postpaid plan. The phones may also be bought separately from the Globe stores at discounted prices when bundled with a SIM-only plan.
The company also has a wide 5G roaming coverage internationally, and continues to partner with more 5G-ready telcos around the world so that customers traveling abroad can still have a convenient high-speed data roaming experience.
Globe’s 5G speed is now three times faster than mobile WiFi, according to Ookla® Speedtest Intelligence® data for the first quarter of this year. Globe logged a 5G median download speed of 121.29 Mbps versus the 42.95 Mbps booked by all fixed providers in the Philippines for the first quarter of the year.
It also emerged as the winner of Opensignal’s 5G Video Experience Award with 71.2 points. This means Globe was able to give its users the best experience when streaming video over 5G networks. The report was based on data collected from Jan. 1 to March 31 this year.
