“Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones?”

It added, “Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete, and replace us? Should we risk the loss of control of our civilization?”

Afterward, the AI open letter claims we should only develop more powerful AI once we know we can control their risks. It also shared a recent statement from OpenAI:

“At some point, it may be important to get an independent review before starting to train future systems….”

“…and for the most advanced efforts to agree to limit the rate of growth of compute used for creating new models.”

Thus, it calls on “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

Over 1,000 tech experts, such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have signed the petition.

Conclusion

Elon Musk and other tech innovators signed an AI open letter urging a pause on artificial intelligence research for six months.

Yet, rumors in February said Elon Musk was trying to create an AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT. According to The Register, he wants it to be “less restrictive and politically correct.”
