Ready Player One author announces upcoming game
With AI and virtual reality glasses becoming more widespread, we seem to be getting closer to a tech-dominated future. Yet, it all seems to draw inspiration from an old story: a 2011 novel named “Ready Player One.” Believe it or not, author Ernest Cline believes the future he wrote is now, and it is time to unveil his latest creation.
Readyverse Studios, the blockchain tech company he co-founded, announced it will release a metaverse-based video game called “OPEN.” Its official description depicts it as a sort of “Fortnite clone.” It will be a third-person shooter where players eliminate others to become the last person standing.
What do we know about the Ready Player One game?
The official OPEN YouTube channel posted its official teaser on Sunday, March 17. It revealed a fictional setting that emulates the setting of Cline’s classic.

“The future has arrived even more quickly than I imagined,” said Ernest Cline in a PR Newswire post. “With Readyverse Studios, we have the opportunity to leverage the revolutionary technology Futureverse has been building for several years to bring to life the best possible version of the metaverse.”

“Challengers embark on game-show-styled, multi-round collaborative and competitive game modes, but only one hero can emerge victorious.”
“Hone and showcase a vast array of gaming disciplines, where tactical positioning, sly movement, strategic shooting, and driving skills take center stage, as you join forces with worthy allies, plan together for strategic advantages, and engage in intense gameplay sessions.”
In other words, the cyber dystopia author’s game will likely play like Fortnite, except it closely resembles the 2011 novel’s setting. Readyverse hasn’t specified a release date for this game at the time of writing.
