Most parents control their children’s playtime, whether they’re playing with toys, video games, or their friends. Kids may not like it, but the point is to ensure they develop enough discipline to focus on important tasks as adults.

A recent incident in Japan proves how important this lesson is. A Japanese police officer found himself in hot water after playing the Nintendo Switch while on duty.

The Japan News reported that an officer from the Tenri Police Station received a warning from the Nara prefectural police department director after he played video games while on duty.

The officer played games 10 times, totaling 17 hours, while on duty at the police box. The prefectural police said the officer neglected work while connecting his Nintendo Switch console to a TV in a break room.

In February, a surprise inspection revealed the game console was still connected to the television.

The officer in his 40s reportedly admitted and regretted his actions, saying, “I played games when there were few incidents.”

The prefectural police will deduct the amount of time he spent playing video games from his salary.

As of June 30, 2023, it has sold 129.53 million units. MakeUseOf lists these reasons for the Nintendo Switch console’s popularity:

  1. It has great first-party launch titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
  2. The Nintendo Switch has a massive library of games. You may choose the latest titles along with indie and retro options.
  3. The console mixes handheld and home consoles. The unit has a proprietary screen, but you may link it to a TV to play on a larger screen. Also, you may share the other Joy-Con controller with a friend to play multiplayer titles.
  4. It is a more affordable option than the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, the two more powerful gaming consoles. At the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch is roughly ₱12,750.00. In contrast, the PS5 costs ₱24,000, and the latest Xbox is ₱30,000.
  5. It caters to various audiences. Families can enjoy wholesome games like Mario Kart, while others may have fun with more mature titles like Resident Evil 4.
