Many things separate people from artificial intelligence, and the ability to remember things as we encounter them is one.

Most machines require direct inputs from humans to remember specific information. On the other hand, you remember your girlfriend’s birthday because she’s special to you.

However, artificial intelligence is gaining this natural human trait as OpenAI adds a Memory feature to its world-famous ChatGPT.

How does ChatGPT memory work?

You may gain the new ChatGPT memory feature by subscribing to ChatGPT Plus for $20 monthly. Turn it on by logging on to its website and opening Settings.

Then, select Personalization and then pick Memory. The Personalization tab includes custom instructions, which functions like the new function.

Custom instructions are a set of rules that the AI chatbot will follow for each conversation. On the other hand, memory remembers information from past threads to guide AI results.

You input custom instructions manually; ChatGPT memory saves data automatically. For example, it may generate bullet format results based on past interactions requesting that guideline.

The official OpenAI blog also shares these examples:

  • You’ve explained that you prefer meeting notes to have headlines, bullets, and action items summarized at the bottom. ChatGPT remembers this and recaps meetings this way.
  • You’ve told ChatGPT you own a neighborhood coffee shop. When brainstorming messaging for a social post celebrating a new location, ChatGPT knows where to start.
  • You mention that you have a toddler and that she loves jellyfish. When you ask ChatGPT to help create her birthday card, it suggests a jellyfish wearing a party hat.
  • As a kindergarten teacher with 25 students, you prefer 50-minute lessons with follow-up activities. ChatGPT remembers this when helping you create lesson plans.

As a result, ChatGPT becomes a more capable and convenient digital assistant, remembering your preferences so that you don’t have to repeat them.
