Katy Perry turned heads at this year’s Met Gala in a sprawling floral dress, gaining roughly 15.9 million views and 314,500 likes at the time of writing.

However, X’s community notes warn viewers, “This image is fake. Katy Perry was not at the 2024 Met Gala and this image was most likely created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).”

The original AI Met Gala Gown was from X user @jxries, but another outfit from the same musician went viral.

It features the California Girl in a shorter version of the original dress, gaining 4.7 million views and 115,400 likes at the time of writing.

In response, the singer reposted the images on Instagram with the caption “couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.”

Other AI-generated gowns featuring Rihanna and Dua Lipa went viral. Forbes reported the former couldn’t attend the Met Gala 2024 because of the flu.

Most responded positively to the AI-made outfits. “Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met,” said Katy Perry’s mom, according to ABC News.

“What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol,” she added.

How were the AI dresses created?

The news outlet contacted the creator of the AI-generated images, the Brazilian Katy Perry superfan Sali.

He said he used artificial intelligence to create the picture but used Photoshop and other real images to achieve realism.

“I use AI to facilitate the editing process, adding texture to the skin and striving for the most realistic outcome possible,” he told ABC News.

“I also incorporate real images of people, replacing their faces with Katy Perry’s. Katy’s face is finalized using editing software to ensure seamless integration,” Sali added.

“My work involves AI, but most of the time, it’s just to touch up details and make things a bit more realistic.”

“AI isn’t as advanced as people think. It struggles. It’s not like you can just write a prompt and it generates an image of Katy Perry, it’s not like that.”

“So, it’s manual work, focusing on her body and face. This involves bringing in tattoos, body details, and proportions. It’s not easy.”
