How does Google LearnLM work?

An official Google blog says LearnLM will “help make learning experiences more engaging, personal, and useful.

It is a collaboration of Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google product teams. Also, the search engine firm worked with educators to meet the following goals:

  • Inspire active learning: Allow for practice and healthy struggle with timely feedback
  • Manage cognitive load: Present relevant, well-structured information in multiple modalities
  • Adapt to the learner: Dynamically adjust to goals and needs, grounding in relevant materials
  • Stimulate curiosity: Inspire engagement to motivate through the learning journey
  • Deepen metacognition: Plan, monitor, and help the learner reflect on progress

As mentioned, Google will integrate LearnLM into widely-used Google products like the search engine and YouTube. The official post shares these examples;

  • Google Search will help you make sense of complex topics by tapping a button to adjust your AI overview. It will let you simplify the language or read more details to facilitate learning.
  • Circle to Search will help students solve math problems on their phones and tablets. For example, your kid may encircle a math problem with his or her finger to get an AI-generated solution.
  • Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, will have Gems, custom versions of Gemini that explain specific topics. For example, Learning Coach will provide step-by-step guidance, quizzes, and games.
  • YouTube will have an AI tool that will let you ask clarifying questions or take a quiz while watching academic videos.

Google is also developing two experimental learning features: Illuminate and Learn About. Illuminate breaks down research papers into short audio conversations.

As a result, you can learn what you need from hundreds of pages easily. Meanwhile, Learn About will bring together high-quality content and chat experiences to help people learn anything at their own pace.
