Many felt disappointed when Elon Musk turned Twitter into the X app. However, its most recent change shocked more around the world.

In May 2024, the X platform officially allowed pornographic and explicit material on the social media platform. Unfortunately, many children use the X app who might see such content.

The first step to keeping your X news feed safe for work is to set your child’s account to under 18. Don’t enter a birth date or enter one that puts your kid under 18 years of age when creating an account.

Lifehacker says these steps will consider the account holder as a minor and keep them away from adult content. Also, you must turn on the sensitive content filter with these steps:

  1. Open the X app on your desktop browser.
  2. Then, click on your profile icon.
  3. Open Settings and Privacy.
  4. Next, open the Privacy and Safety menu.
  5. Click the Content you see option.
  6. Untick the box beside the Display media that may contain sensitive information option.

These steps will prevent sensitive content from slipping through filters with new terms. Also, you may click Search Settings and toggle on Hide sensitive content to keep flagged posts from appearing in searches.

The X app may have allowed pornographic content, but it still imposes rules on them. For example, users who post not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content must mark their content as such.

If explicit content slips through the earlier steps, it may have violated the terms. That means you may report that post with these instructions:

  1. Click on the three-dot menu in the upper right and then click Report Post next to the flag icon.
  2. Next, click the Spam option.
  3. Click the Next button to submit your report.
  4. Afterward, choose to either Mute or Block the poster.

Alternatively, you may report the post for Abuse & Harassment or Sensitive or disturbing media. The former is for suspected illegal content, and the latter is for nudity without a content warning.

None of these methods are foolproof, so the X app may still show inappropriate content. That is why parents and others who do not want to view NSFW posts have two options.
