SearchGPT, the ChatGPT search engine, now has a prototype

Google has been the top search engine worldwide for many decades. However, that will likely change as OpenAI released its SearchGPT prototype.

On July 25, 2024, the company unveiled the test version of its AI-powered search engine. The AI firm said it is “launching to a small group of users and publishers to get feedback.

Rumors regarding OpenAI’s search engine have been circulating for months. On May 1, 2024, an X social media user with the pseudonym Jimmy Apples claimed OpenAI might announce a search engine on May 9.

Also, a Reddit post from r/singularity allegedly spotted a “search.chatgpt.com” domain and an SSL certification. This Inquirer Tech article says the AI firm could be preparing the URL for OpenAI Search.

Aside from the online rumors, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT could be the future of search in an episode of the Lex Fridman podcast.

“If we can build a better search engine than Google, then we should,” said Altman.

“Google shows you 13 ads and ten blue links, which is one way to find information, but the thing that is exciting to me is that maybe there is a much better way to help people find and act on information.”

“Maybe it is interesting to say ‘How do we help you find the information you need, how do we help create that in some cases or point you to it in others’,” Altman added.

On July 25, 2024, the AI leader released a test version of that platform called SearchGPT.  Its official website shows a search platform that has a simpler, cleaner look than Google.

The AI-powered search engine also lets you ask follow-up questions regarding your queries, making it easier to learn more information.
