Open source AI definition backed by AI industry leaders

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) unveiled its definition framework for open source AI, receiving wide support from industry leaders. 

Nowadays, more companies like Meta are releasing open source AI, claiming to help everyone benefit from this technology. 

The OSI’s latest framework will ensure these innovations truly benefit everyone, especially those who devote enough time and effort to harness its potential.

What is an open source AI?

IBM says open source software is “available for anyone to use, examine, alter, and redistribute however they like, typically at no cost.”

True to its goal of “advocating for the benefits of open source,” it unveiled “The Open Source AI Definition – 1.0.”

According to the Open Source Initiative, such a program allows anyone to do the following:

  • Use the system for any purpose and without having to ask for permission
  • Study how the system works and inspect its components
  • Modify the system for any purpose, including to change its output
  • Share the system for others to use with or without modifications, for a purpose

Ayah Bdeir, who leads AI strategy at Mozilla, showed her support for the framework.

She stated that it will ensure “a skilled person can recreate a substantially equivalent system using the same or similar data.”

AI News reports Bdeir admits the definition is not perfect. Nonetheless, it represents a “practical compromise” between ideals and real-world implementation.

Nonprofit AI research lab EleutherAI also endorsed the framework: 

“The Open Source AI Definition is a necessary step towards promoting the benefits of open-source principles in the field of AI,” stated Stella Biderman, Executive Director of the EleutherAI Institute.

“We believe that this definition supports the needs of independent machine learning researchers and promotes greater transparency among the largest AI developers.”
