Mercedes-Benz shares the same long-term goal. “We are moving towards zero emissions and are launching many electric products,” it stated.
The Popemobile has a rotating seat and handcrafted interior furnishings.
Moreover, it has heating and a grab bar so that the Pope can stand to address crowds.
It has a retractable roof to protect the Holy Father from the elements.
Also, the right side back door has rotating hinges, while the left is completely welded.
Mercedes Development Engineer Peter Zotter described the EV as “a unique piece with all the features.”
Moreover, he helps that “it will provide the Holy Father with the comfort he needs for his travels.”
Despite the 2025 Popemobile’s modern touches, it maintains traditional features.
For example, it is white and has the license plate SCV 1 (State of Vatican City).
“With this Popemobile, we are also sending out a clear call for electro-mobility and decarbonization,” said the Mercedes-Benz CEO.
The German automaker has been manufacturing papal vehicles since building a Nürburg 460 Pullman Sedan for Pope Pius XI in 1930.
The Vatican did not immediately specify when the new Popemobile would come into service.
