Kärcher, Intramuros Administration clean historic Fort Santiago
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — German cleaning technology firm Kärcher partnered with the Intramuros Administration (IA) to perform restorative cleaning at Fort Santiago.
They will clean parts of the reconstructed main gate. Also, the project includes the wall facades of Baluartillo de San Miguel and Medio Baluarte de San Francisco.

The project is part of Kärcher’s 90th-anniversary challenge. Specifically, it involves completing 90 cleaning projects in public places and historic buildings worldwide in 2025.
Fort Santiago is especially historic as it was constructed in 1571 under Spanish navigator Miguel López de Legazpi.
It served as a critical defense fortress within the Walled City, Intramuros. Nowadays, it stands as a national monument that shows local and foreign visitors the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage.
Fort Santiago faces new environmental issues like organic growth. Fortunately, Kärcher is here to help.
It will use hot water high-pressure cleaners. Moreover, they will maintain a pressure of 0.5-1 bar across the Fort’s surface at 95°C.
The steam’s heat is crucial to the cleaning process. It helps eliminate seeds of biological growth in the stone walls.

The Intramuros Administration is a National Government Agency attached to the Department of Tourism of the Philippines.
Under Presidential Decree No. 1616, IA is in charge of the orderly restoration and development of Intramuros as a monument to the Hispanic period of Philippine history.
