CICC promotes digital literacy for every ‘Juana’

Botor and CCW Ambassador Christine Escalante during the launch of Juana Tech at the National Cybercrime Hub in Bonifacio Global City.

TAGUIG, PHILIPPINES — The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and non-government organizations launched a new program that ensures Filipina women can access digital literacy.

On March 19, over 100 participants from various organization learned about the Juana Tech program at the National Cybercrime Hub.

Joining them were co-organizeres from Scam Watch Pilipinas, Women in Security Alliance Philippines (WiSAP), and the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines, Inc. (JSAP).

Representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Authority on Child Care (NACC), Citizen Crime Watch, STI College-Bonifacio Global City, and Converge were also present.

WiSAP President Mel Migrino said that the program will have numerous topics, such as website building, content production, and cyber safety.

JSAP Chair Lucia P. Tangi emphasized that those in the academe will benefit from Juana Tech as many women educators have no access to digital training.

The UNESCO defines “digital literacy” as “the confident and critical use of a full range of digital technologies for information, communication, and basic problem-solving in all aspects of life.”

That’s why many representatives shared valuable lessons during Juana Tech’s launch. 

Ms. Liberty T. Bituin, an Investigator Agent I from the Women and Children Section of CICC, presented a gender analysis on CiCC cybercrime statistics.

Ms. Christine Escalante, a Citizen Crime Watch Ambassador and Lead Volunteer Watcher of Scam Watch Pilipinas, promoted the “Kontra Scam” attitude for everyday women.

Moreover, Ms. Rosie Shorter, Astria Philippines CEO and WiSAP volunteer, discussed the implications of cyberbullying. 

Ms. Jay-Ann Encarnado, Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications and PR at Converge ICT, shared on bridging the digital divide. 

She also elaborated on how Filipina professionals can lead in the digital era.
