Now at 10% market share, HONOR flaunts the Magic V6

The HONOR Magic V6 is the 5th iteration of the HONOR foldable. I’ve been testing this series since its second iteration, seeing improvements (some minute, some significant) through the years. The Magic V6 is a welcome addition to a market that has become more accepting of foldables. HONOR has done its research: the number one concern of foldables isn’t the camera quality or battery life. It’s the durability. It doesn’t take a genius to see why: anything that bends may break and a folding screen with moving hinges adds to the stress of owning a device that’s in the six digits.

Fair.

The rigors of testing

I have had the privilege to visit the HONOR HQ in Shenzhen to see the rigorous certifications being put to the test. To be fair, I’ve seen other brands do similar things, from laptops to other smartphones being bent, dunked, thrown, and folded thousands of times in a controlled, sterile environment. That’s how certifications work and to see it as a standard for testing is a good sign. It’s less of a PR move and more of a … certification! So when I see that the HONOR Magic V6 has both IP68 and IP69 certifications (dust and high pressure water) I know what it’s been through. And knowing what it’s been through puts things into a better perspective as I see more Filipinos wanting to buy “that one phone” that will last throughout the RAM-gate. Expected to last till 2030, the increase in the price of anything that has a solid state drive and RAM (a smartphone has both!) is unprecedented. It’s not that Filipinos are no longer willing to buy phones — it’s really because they want something that can brave through the howls of the next few years without breaking.

In the last series, HONOR was pushing the V5 to be the thinnest of the flagship foldables. This year, the V6 is promoted as the durable foldable. This is already the 5th iteration of the product: After the 2nd or 3rd version in a series, it’s tweaks to make the stuff inside last longer. In fact, I have a V3 that still works today!

FEATURED STORIES

Have you noticed most flagship phone brands have stopped talking about performance? They’re all the same (with minor differences) when you reach Snapdragon 8 Elite status. So it’s battery, camera, and yes, durability that often gets promoted.

The HONOR Magic V6 is a looker. It’s lighter than the V5 with a bigger 6,600mAh Silicon Carbon battery. Everything is upgraded: the Falcon system camera, an upgraded AI-suite, yes, the battery. And overall it’s lighter. The Falcon System has seen significant upgrades since the V3, especially with the upgraded telephoto camera, a boon for concert-goers.

Specs to last

The HONOR Magic V6 raises the bar for foldable smartphones with its HONOR Anti-Scratch NanoCrystal Shield, Super Steel Hinge, and IP68 and IP69 certifications, offering enhanced durability without compromising its slim and sophisticated design.

Final thoughts

Latest consumer reports from Omdia show that HONOR has entered the magical top 5 in the Philippines with a 10% market share. This is huge news as they have made their ecosystem more attractive by rebranding themselves as a smart device company (not just phones). This means they are poised to go up against the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi for the number one spot in the years to come. The HONOR Magic V6, alongside its other flagship models also support seven years of software updates which shows wide commitment for how long your device can last.

HONOR started out as an industry vagabond, using shock marketing tactics to get users to pay attention. They no longer need that. As a mature company with a huge 10% market share for the Philippines, their products need to speak for themselves, and it’s a great thing that they do.
