Redmi Note 17 Pro Series: How much battery do you really need?

Redmi Note 17 Pro Series: How much battery do you really need?

01:31 PM September 16, 2026

I tried both the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G, and after using them, the biggest difference I noticed came down to one thing: battery.

Durability I could actually test

The weather has been unpredictable lately, and I got to put the phones’ durability to use. There were times when I got caught in sudden rain while booking a ride or checking directions, and normally I’d be hunched over trying to shield my phone with my body or putting it inside my bag so it wouldn’t get drenched.

With the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G and Pro Max 5G, I was more comfortable keeping my phone out when I needed it. Both have IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings, 3-meter drop resistance, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The two phones are more or less the same when it comes to durability, so for me, that wasn’t really a reason to pick one over the other. I liked having that extra peace of mind, especially when I’m already trying to deal with the rain and everything else going on around me.

The biggest difference is the battery

This is where the two phones really separate themselves. The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G has an 8,340mAh battery, while the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G has a 10,000mAh battery.

The 8,340mAh battery on the Pro 5G is already a lot for my usual day. I’m constantly using my phone for work, messages, social media, watching videos, checking things online, and plenty of other little tasks.

But after using the Pro Max, I understood why having a 10,000mAh battery could be useful.

With my personal use, I was able to get almost three days of battery life. I was chatting with people, playing games, and spending quite a bit of time watching Chinese dramas on TikTok. I wasn’t specifically trying to conserve battery either. That was just how I normally used the phone. Because my phone is essential to me, I noticed the difference.

I usually think about my battery throughout the day. If I’m going somewhere for several hours, I’ll make sure my phone is charged before leaving. If I’m going to be away from an outlet, I’ll start thinking about whether I should bring a power bank.

With the Pro Max, I found myself checking the battery percentage much less often.

So, which one makes more sense?

After using both, I don’t think the biggest difference is durability. They’re quite similar in that area, and I was able to see that for myself while using them during unpredictable weather.

For me, it really comes down to how much battery you want.

The Pro 5G’s 8,340mAh battery is already more than enough for regular daily use. But if you’re someone like me who spends a lot of time on your phone and doesn’t want to think about charging as often, the Pro Max’s 10,000mAh battery is the feature that stands out.

I appreciated the Pro Max most for that reason. Nearly three days of my normal usage meant one less thing I had to think about, and when your phone is something you rely on throughout the day, that can make a surprisingly big difference.

The choice comes down to battery life

Overall, the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G and Pro Max 5G offer a similar experience, with the biggest difference coming down to battery capacity. The Pro packs an 8,340mAh battery, while the Pro Max goes up to 10,000mAh.
