Snapchat acquires 3D selfie app Seene–report
Social media app Snapchat has bought Seene, a smartphone-based 3D company, in a leap to produce extravagant and fantastic 3D selfies, according to reports.
Tech news site Tech Crunch said Snapchat had been interested in the 3D company to engineer a format for a brand-new category of selfie lenses, realistic face-swapping feature, and a new 3D photo format for the social media app. Snapchat reportedly bought Seene “a couple of months ago for a low price,” and is about to relocate Seene’s employees from its headquarters in London to Snapchat’s home base in Los Angeles, California.
Seene is a suitable 3D app for augmented reality feature of selfies because it does not need multiple cameras and special infrared sensors. Moreover, it uses a smartphone’s camera to scan a 2D image and inserts a 3D image to the picture.
In 2015, the social media giant app acquired another small startup, Looksery, to superbly enhance its selfie lenses. Snapchat aspires to conquer the planet of “social media snapping” by combining Looksery’s technology with Seene’s cutting-edge 3D feature magic. Gianna Francesca Catolico
