Many “advanced” gamers may feel a tad older as classic first person shooter Quake celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, June 22.

Quake is a product of id Software and was released way back in 1996. According to a report on Engadget, while the game was not as genre-defining as Doom, the game was still considered revolutionary for its time. It was presented entirely in 3D when most games back then used 2.5D engines. Quake was also the first to lean toward internet multi-playability.

The Quake’s influence extended beyond its core games. Its flexible code led to the development of Team Fortress, which is still being enjoyed by players worldwide albeit in its more current iteration, Team Fortress 2. In fact, many of the present-day shooters can trace their game mechanics all the way back to Quake in one form or another.
