WATCH: Chinese group rapping in English a hit among netizens

A music video featuring Chinese hipsters rapping in English is circulating speedily on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo.

The video, entitled “This is China,” was posted on Tuesday by China’s Communist Youth League and has been shared 48,000 times, liked 35, 000 times, and commented 6,700 times on Weibo.

The music clip, which features snippets of Chinese tourist spots and cultural values, proclaimed a gist that “the red dragon is not evil” and “the beautiful land with rich culture remains.” The music video, claims that China, which has been branded as a “developing country with a large population difficult to manage,” has a virgin image that’s been tainted and fabricated by media for decades.

It also tackled crucial and controversial issues, such as the mainland’s relationship with Taiwan, considered a “renegade province.” “As you don’t know the relationships between it and Mainland, actually for normal citizens, we just want to be united as one because we think we are in one family, the same,” so the song goes.

It also gloated that China has a highly reputable police force that is “kind to citizens but crucial to enemies” and cutting-edge inventions, including Tu Youyou’s artemisinin and reliant mobile payment apps.

The song concludes, “We know that we have terrible things to deal with, the power of Chinese people in China are gradually proving that we can make a better world as we love peace and harmony.”

A BBC report noted that some Chinese netizens were deeply touched by the video and their Chinese pride was uplifted, while others questioned why the video did not have Mandarin subtitles. Gianna Francesca Catolico
